Nancy Pelosi and Health care

Posted in Politics, Society | No Comments »

Nancy Pelosi scares the crap out of me!

She is a one-woman steam-rolling, havoc-wreaking machine.

Explain to me why her new health care bill is 400,000 words of legalese.  What is she trying to hide?

The Democrats keep saying they want to increase competitiveness within the private sector of health care.  Yet, these are the same people who insist of restricting interstate competition.  They are the same people who want to offer a new public option, but at the same time, add NEW restrictions to the private insurance companies that do exist.  Interesting.

Whenever the government intercedes in private industry, it seems to cost ME money.

Whenever the government intercedes, there’s more red tape, more bureaucracy and escalated costs involved.  Did I mention the costs trickle down to ME? and to you?!!!

The last time they spent my money, in the form of the stimulus bill, how well did that go over?  Where are all the new jobs the stimulus bill was going to create?

It seems to me that Nancy Pelosi, President Obama, Harry Reid and the like just want to tell people what they want to hear.  Why would they do this?  Duh.  They want to get elected.  They crave the power.  They don’t give a CRAP about Joe Regular Guy.  They don’t know what it feels like to live paycheck to paycheck.  They don’t know what it feels like to struggle to put shoes on your children’s feet.

They are Band-Aid People.

Band-Aid People like the quick fix with no sense of consequences.

In a previous post I did agree that something needs to be done to improve our health care system.  I would absolutely support and pay for health care for all children.  I would support loosening the laws so that private insurers would have more competition, thus driving costs down and opening up options for adults.  I support covering all health care costs directly caused to those who worked at Ground Zero.  I believe in insuring public service workers who get paid crap, and military personnel who protect our freedoms.

I do not support covering those who do not fall under the aforementioned umbrella.

I do not support this Democrat Runaway Train currently ruling our country.  Where are the Checks and Balances?

Enough Already!

Why are Pelosi and Reid in such a rush to get these bills through?  Are they afraid someone will catch something in the text they are suppose to overlook?   At almost 2,000 pages deceit and subterfuge are surely in there somewhere (sorry, but I can’t help but be pessimistic).

When I was a child, I remember doctors were wealthy.  They earned it, no?  6+ years of school, hours away from family and friends, etc., etc., etc.  The Establishment has slowly stripped away at all the things that were great about medicine because politics became involved.

STAY OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope to GOD that in 2010, the voters in this country will have gotten a clearer view of Washington and DO SOMETHING!  Get rid of the Pelosis and Reids and find people who have a CLUE what it means to be a middle class American.

Hormones

Posted in Me! | No Comments »

I am at the mercy of my hormones.

Remember back in the day when you were a teenager and hormones completely ruled your existence?  Guess what?  You get to experience all that again mid-life.  Hooray for hormones!

Hormones control so many systems in our body, it’s amazing that they work so well.  At least most of the time!

In the last year, I have had more zits on face then I’ve had COMBINED as a teenager.  Ridiculous.  I seek out new bottles of Clearasil every time I walk into CVS.  I even went to a dermatologist to fix the problem.  My favorite facial zits are the ones on the tip of my nose OR the one right between my eyes.  Lovely.

Hormones pack on some extra pounds on your hips and in your belly too.  More JOY!  Should I even bother to mention that the added weight is even harder to lose than those five extra pounds you meant to lose 10 years ago?

As I’m approaching my forties, I have the added bonus of of hormonal imbalances that mess with my Aunt Flo.  So, regardless of the fact that I have been like clockwork for the last 25 years, hormones have decided that I’d become complacent.

Are you sensing a pattern here?

Lately, my experiences with hormones have not been very positive.  In their defense, hormones regulate so many bodily functions that I would be remiss to not include an example or two where they actually work.

I do not have an over-abundance of testosterone, so I’m not a hairy nymphomaniac.  Of course, some people might actually like that!  Don’t worry, I won’t go there!!!!

I still ovulate and could get pregnant, if that’s what I wanted.  No, thank you!

My metabolism still works, even though it’s slower than I would like!  I could be one of those thyroid-challenged people who have to take synthetic hormones every day and gain 50 pounds before they even know something is wrong.  SO, I have that going for me :)

As a   teenager, I complained about a variety of things, but never made the connection to hormones.  As an adult, I have new-found respect and knowledge for them.  They control so many different functions, that when one is off, you can frequently tell the difference.

Hormones can make us happy or sad, thin or fat, clear-skinner or riddled with acne, horny or asexual.

Who knew they could pack so much power?!

Little bastards :)

Baseball

It’s post-season time!  The Phillies are already in.  The Yankees are getting closer by the minute (literally).

God, I love baseball!!!  Specifically, Yankee baseball.

The NY Yankees are an institution.  Yes, detractors will say they “buy” their championships.  If so, why has it been six years?  The Yankees have earned their reputation as one of the best baseball organizations.  Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Reggie Jackson, Bucky Dent, Derek Jeter, A-Rod…some of the greatest baseball players of all time.  They are the team people love to hate.

For those of us who are Yankee fans, it’s a religion.  We are a group that screams, “never say ‘die’”!  Or as Yogi Berra said, “it ain’t over til it’s over”.  It doesn’t matter if the team is down 12-0.  Yankees don’t give up.  In Game 4 of the ALCS, Angels fans just looked so dejected and resigned to failure.  It was pathetic!  Yankee fans would NEVER give in like that!!!

Yes, Yankee fans are loud and obnoxious.  We call it enthusiasm.  We scream at the players, the umpires and the coaches.  We post things obsessively on Facebook.  We simply LOVE the game.

My love for the game started very early.  I remember going to my brother’s Little League games and thinking, “I could do that!”.  So, when I was old enough (7, I think), I started my journey playing ball.  This, of course, was at a time when girls were just really starting to get involved in sports.

Baseball also became the link between my father and me.  I still call him up when there’s a bad call (like in Game 4) or when the Yankees come back from being behind for most of the game (Game 5).  Dad was my coach for many years, and helps out when I coach my daughters.  It is one of the things that truly binds us.

It helps that I was a really good softball player too!

Going to any baseball game is a traditional.  It’s Americana.  Of course, the days of taking a family of four to a game for under $100 is nearly over (except if you sit in the bleachers and don’t eat).  Who cares?!!! There’s something familiar and comforting in taking your kids to a game.  I wish I could send my love of the game to my children through osmosis!

In the meantime, it’s a close game and I need to go scream at the television!

Jen Lancaster

A few months ago, someone recommended the memoirs of Jen Lancaster.  Oh,my, God, it’s like finding my kindred spirit.

She is loud, raunchy, politically INcorrect and funny as hell.  I am not nearly has funny, but I can relate to her thought process in so many instances.

Her husband, Fletch, even works in IT like G.

The biggest difference is she’s a Midwestern girl.  I never thought Midwesterners had the same kind of obnoxious, blatant and sarcastic sense of humor of we New Yorkers.

****UPDATE**** Just read her website and she is from the NY area originally.  OF COURSE she is!  I should have known!!!!

What a refreshing surprise!

Jen Lancaster is an admitted narcissist forging her way through city life and all its incarnations.  She’s got bad neighbors, ridiculous experiences and foolish moments.  You can’t help but fall in love with her!  She’s not afraid to let her readers get to know her — warts and all.  She freely admits that she’s not perfect.

She makes me feel better about all my instances of “putting my foot in my mouth”.  I don’t feel so alone :)  She becomes an EveryWoman who makes the same missteps and mistakes as the rest of us.  This is the real link for true sisterhood.

Instead of competing with each other (consciously or subconsciously), we should share our trials and tribulations over nods of recognition!  Everything seems better when someone else has done it too!

Lancaster is straight-forward and to the point.  She is just a honest storyteller.  You feel like you’re having a conversation with your girlfriend.  And isn’t that really the best feeling?

Sometimes it’s nice to just curl up with a good book, have a few laughs and feel like you’re not alone.  Lancaster hands that to you in a sarcastic and funny little package.
